Tuesday afternoon, Red Sox President of Baseball Ops Dave Dombrowski announced during his media availability that manager John Farrell will indeed be back for the 2017 season. This follows a whole lot of speculation, from many throughout the baseball season, about just how much longer Farrell would have his job in Boston. That near season-long question has been answered.
Farrell spoke just a half an hour before Dombrowski did. Farrell was, of course, asked about his future as Red Sox manager. He gave a non-answer, replying with how he hasn’t looked past today and how he hasn’t spoken with Dombrowski about it yet.
It appears as if Dombrowski told Farrell in between their individual press conferences that he’d be back next season. Dombrowski started off the presser by telling the media that Farrell would be manager for another year. He also added that the rest of the staff will be invited back, as well.
Farrell is signed with the Red Sox through the 2017 season, and there’s no word on whether or not they will pick up his 2018 option. Dombrowski also dismissed any word that Farrell was on the hot seat following Boston’s elimination from the postseason on Sunday night. Dombrowski has reaffirmed that he and Farrell have a good relationship, and Dombrowski thought that Farrell did “a fine job” this season.
The Red Sox have a lot of questions to be answered and a lot of moves to be made in the offseason – one is already figured out just days into the postseason. No matter your opinion on Farrell, he’s here for another year. Hold in there, or congratulations, depending on your viewpoint of him.
