NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) is pleased to announce that Ocean State left fielder Travis Honeyman (Boston College) has been named the 2021 Rick Ligi Most Valuable Player.

He becomes the first Ocean State player in franchise history to be awarded the honor.

Honeyman, who was also named the league’s Batting Champion and Rookie of the Year on Thursday, as well as an all-league first-team selection on Tuesday, earned his fourth 2021 NECBL accolade by taking home the New England League’s most prestigious individual playing honor. He becomes the first Ocean State player in the organization’s history to be crowned MVP.

The Massapequa, New York, native owned a .430 average, breaking the previous New England League batting record by one decimal point, a longtime record previously set in 1997 and held by Jim Deschaine. Honeyman’s batting title also made him the league leader in slugging percentage (.763) and on-base percentage (.530) through the 2021 season on top of possessing the fourth-best OPS in the league this summer (1.293) through 30 games played.

The right-handed hitter ranked in the top-10 in total hits (40) in just 93 at-bats, collected 26 RBI while scoring the same number himself, drew 15 walks, stole 14 bases, hit eight doubles and seven home runs in his historic summer with the Waves. The rising sophomore at Boston College helped lead Ocean State to the Southern Division Semifinals after an upset Wild Card round win against the third-seed Mystic Schooners in Groton.

Honeyman started just one game in his first season with the Eagles in Boston this season, batting .071 in 14 plate appearances with a pair of RBI and one run scored while BC finished last in the ACC. Nonetheless, that did not stop Honeyman from pursuing the opportunity to play summer baseball and improve his skills – it could not have worked out any better for the young star.
